What A Proprietary Blend Hides

The phrase to look for

Turn a supplement bottle over. If the facts panel gives a single weight for a list of ingredients — 1,398 mg across five of them, for instance — that is a proprietary blend or formulation. It is entirely legal and it is everywhere in this category. What it means is that the manufacturer has told you the total and withheld the split.

What it still tells you

More than nothing. Ingredients inside a blend must be listed in descending order of weight, so the first name is the biggest share and the last is the smallest. That ordering is real, enforceable information, and it is the only information of its type a blend gives you. JointsAid prints its five in that order and says as much on the page.

You also still get the total. A 1,398 mg serving is meaningfully different from a 300 mg one, even before you know the breakdown.

What it hides, and why that matters here

Joint ingredients are dose-sensitive in the literature. Glucosamine trials use specific daily amounts. Boswellia studies use standardized extracts at stated strengths. Without per-ingredient quantities you cannot line a product up against any of that research — not because the product is necessarily under-dosed, but because the comparison is simply unavailable to you.

That is a real limitation and it deserves stating plainly rather than glossing. It is also not unique to any one brand; most of the shelf works this way.

Why manufacturers do it

Two reasons are usually given. One is competitive: publishing exact ratios makes a formula trivial to copy. The other is less flattering: a blend can conceal a large cheap ingredient carrying several token ones. Both explanations are plausible and neither is verifiable from outside.

Three lines worth more than the front label

• Serving size. Sixty capsules is one month at two a day and two months at one. Compare products by cost per day, never per bottle.
• Other ingredients. Capsule shell, fillers, flow agents — and where a shellfish-derived ingredient may or may not be identified.
• The caution text. Medication interactions, pregnancy, age limits. Smallest print, most consequence.
